Dunmurry Primary achieves Eco Schools green flag success

THE school community at Dunmurry Primary has been celebrating their recently awarded green flag.

The flag is a prestigious award which less than 20% of schools in Northern Ireland have achieved and recognises the school’s long term commitment to integrating environmental issues into the curriculum.

The school’s eco-committee, consisting of pupils from P4-P7, has developed a number of projects including composting and recycling, energy saving, Fairtrade Fortnight and healthy eating.

Pupils are encouraged to develop an appreciation for the outdoor environment through a range of planned activities in the school grounds, including vegetable growing, pond dipping and minibeast hunts amongst other things.

Eco Flag assessors, Mr Nigel McGarry and Miss Patricia Magee praised the hard work of the pupils and were particularly impressed by the way in which pupils were able to answer questions relating to the environment with understanding and commitment when they visited the classes on their walk around.
