Everything from SUVs to sports cars

If you have a wad of cash you may choose instead to not spend it on a new car, but to use a Personal Contract Purchase scheme. And if you don’t have a wad, then this is one of the few ways to get a decent new car on your driveway (you have to buy the driveway).

Here we highlight ten cars you can have for under £500 a month, offering you virtually the whole range of cars – estates, SUVs, electric cars, sports cars, the lot. The deals assume 15 per cent of the value of the car, plus the manufacturer’s finance discount allowance. This also assumes a three-year arrangement with a limit of 10,000 a year.

10. BMW i3 94Ah Auto

Target price cost per month: £433 Target Price (on the road): £29,575 The deal: Three years on a PCP finance deal, with 2.9% APR
The small but perfectly formed electric car from BMW has futuristic lines, mildly startling acceleration and a cabin built to BMW’s usual very high standards. This includes the iDrive infotainment system, the best in the business.

9. Mercedes-Benz GLC 250 d AMG Line Auto

Target price cost per month: £468 Target Price (on the road): £37,316 The deal: 3 years on a PCP finance deal with 5.9% APR and with £1300 finance deposit allowance
This is unusually good value from Mercedes-Benz, and with the full AMG Line trim it’s both quick and fully equipped. The mild SUV lines don’t detract from its enjoyment as a driver’s car, with a cabin more than up to the job.

8. Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TFSI Sport S tronic (Tech Pack)

Target price cost per month: £419 Target Price (on the road): £31,545 The deal: Three years on a PCP finance deal with 6.4% APR and with a finance contribution of £4500
One for the sun, with the roof folding away in under 10sec. The quality of the car is not in question, nor is the amount of enjoyment to be had with this 2.0-litre version. You’ll need the four-wheel drive system to wring the best out of it though.

7. Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate E 220d SE Premium 9G-Tronic

Target price cost per month: £454 Target Price (on the road): £38,056 The deal: Three years on a PCP finance deal with 6.4% APR and with a finance contribution of £1000
We’d recommend this four-cylinder diesel over the 3.0-litre six-cylinder because it’s much more economical and doesn’t seem much less smooth or quiet. Along with that, for about £450 a month, you get one of the all-time great estates, with acres of space in the rear of the beautifully designed and appointed cabin.

6. Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0 TD4 180 SE Tech

Target price cost per month: £431 Target Price (on the road): £32,815 The deal: Three years on a PCP finance deal with 5.9% APR
A perfect choice for those wanting seven-seats and the real ability behind those go-anywhere SUV looks. The ride is beautifully comfortable and the cabin has that English style all its own – all this for well under our target limit.

5. Volvo V90 D4 Inscription Pro Geartronic

Target price cost per month: £500 Target Price (on the road): £40,294 The deal: Three years on a PCP finance deal with 3.9% APR and £1000 finance contribution allowance
If the German estates don’t do it for you, the newly revitalised Scandinavian company could have the answer. This V90 has huge amounts of room and a cabin that is not only classy but it’s also different and, in Inscription trim, fully laden with kit.

4. BMW 3 Series 320d Efficient Dynamics Plus

Target Price cost per month: £488 Target Price (on the road): £30,954 The deal: 3 years on a PCP finance deal with 1.9% APR
A lot of young and not so young execs want this 3 Series as their company car. They’ll love the strong performance, even in this 320d, while their company will love the frugal fuel consumption. The cabins are suitably executive, and include the fabulous iDrive infotainment system.

3. Audi Q5 2.0 TDI Quattro Sport S tronic

Target Price cost per month: £442 Target Price (on the road): £36,252 The deal: 3 years on a PCP finance deal with 6.4% APR and £1000 finance contribution allowance
You might worry that this more sports-oriented big SUV would be a bit hard in the handling and ride department, but not a bit of it. Along with the comfy ride you gain one of the best cabins in the business, untroubled by engine noise from the gutsy 2.0-litre diesel.

2. BMW 5 Series 530d SE auto

Target price cost per month: £441 Target Price (on the road): £39,915 The deal: Three years on a PCP finance deal with 2.9% APR and £3250 finance contribution allowance
Look at this. Further down the list you’ll find the 3 Series, but you can get the bigger and more prestigious 5 Series for even less money a month. With this bigger engine it’s fast and still reasonably frugal, and there’s a tremendous driving package to be enjoyed.

1. Volvo XC40 D4 R Design AWD Geartronic

Target price cost per month: £434 Target Price (on the road): £33,870 The deal: Three years on a PCP finance deal with 5.9% APR
This comfortable, economical and extremely safe SUV is a showcase for just how far Volvo has progressed in recent years. In a crowded field the new XC40 rises to the top, and could be yours for £434 a month.
