Council supports steps to work programme

LISBURN City Council said goodbye and paid best wishes to Mr Maurice Smyth, who worked in the Council’s Finance Unit as a participant in the Steps to Work programme.

The Steps to Work programme has been developed to assist persons who are unemployed and aims to provide the opportunity to learn new skills and work experience to help in return to work or finding employment for the first time.

The Council’s Human Resources Unit oversees the programme in the Council and several participants have already been placed in Council departments over recent times.

During his eight-week period Maurice worked on preparing grants claims and assisted with budget reports as well as undertaking a wide range of other financial work.

The Chairman of the Corporate Services Committee, Councillor Stephen Martin, met Maurice and wished him well in his future career. He said: “I am delighted that Maurice was able to get the opportunity to work with the Council. His Line Manager, Mrs Sara McKerr, was very impressed with his work. The Council is involved in the Steps to Work programme and given today’s economic conditions and the shortage of jobs, we are pleased to be able to help contribute towards a person’s development with the aspiration that experience over time will help to secure employment.”
