McFly and Busted have enjoyed a close relationship during their existence, each writing songs for the other group, so it was only a matter of time before they eventually worked together.

The amalgamation certainly has been a success, with the original 11 date tour selling out within minutes, leading to a 34 date tour, including two nights in Belfast on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Judging by the reaction of the Odyssey crowd, the McBusted experiment gets a resounding thumbs up.

The theme of the night was fun. It’s clear the six McBusted boys - Matt Willis and James Bourne from Busted, without original member Charlie Simpson, who declined to be part of the project, and McFly’s Tom Fletcher, Dougie Poynter, Danny Jones and Harry Judd - are having the time of their lives.

The evening began in Back to the Future-esque fashion as footage of the Busted press conference announcing their split in 2005 appeared on the screen. As Willis and Bourne made their way into the night, a second Bourne appeared telling Willis they needed to go back...back to the future.

The appearance of the DeLorean - made famous by the hit 80’s movies featuring Marty McFly (the DeLorean was produced in the Lisburn area, incidentally) - saw the Busted boys begin their journey to the future, as the McFly boys were shown backstage waiting for the show to begin.

The screaming in the arena reached fever pitch as a DeLorean arrived onstage, with the Back to the Future theme filling the arena, as Willis and Bourne emerged from the car, whilst the four McFly boys erupted from the stage, and McBusted was born.

Kicking off the night with the Busted hit Air Hostess, the guys launched into a series of hit songs from both bands.

In a blistering opening set there was Crash & Burn/You Said No, Britney, Who’s David?, 5 Colours in Her Hair, Obviously and Sleeping with the Light On.

The six guys took to the skies for Star Girl, a hilarious video on the screens beforehand giving the boys time to get to a flying saucer.

Back on the ground for the McFly hit Room on the 3rd Floor, before Thunderbirds Are Go and a cover of the Jackson 5 track I Want You Back.

The excitement kicked up a notch as the guys performed McFly’s superb hit Shine a Light, before the debut hit from Busted, What I Go to School For, still a fabulous song today.

Dougie Poynter brought some laughs as he performed a comedy version of My Heart Will Go On, in honour of being in the city which built the Titanic.

The boys finished in style. Video footage from Tom Fletcher’s wedding filled the screens, his famous wedding speech - which has received millions of views on Youtube - was rudely interrupted by Matt Willis and James Bourne as they Crashed the Wedding, Willis appearing on stage in a wedding dress.

Finishing with the wonderful All About You and the high energy Year 3000, still a fan favourite, the night finished as it began, with lots of fun and the crowd in high spirits.

The McBusted experiment could have gone either way, but it most definitely has been a huge success.

Who knows what the future holds, whether the two bands will go their separate ways or if the six guys will stay together, but the Belfast crowd would definitely be happy to see more from McBusted.
