Lisburn student wins RTS NI best comedy film award

Following on from the success at last year’s Royal Television Society Northern Ireland (RTS NI) Student Television Awards, it was announced online, as the planned ceremony was cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis, that Belfast Met students won this year with short film ‘Crème Brulee or Chocolate Souffle?’ in the Comedy and Entertainment category.

The HND Creative Media students faced off stiff competition and were commended for their high standards of creativity, innovation and technical capability, which was produced by Stacey Burns from Lisburn.

Stacey graduated from Belfast Met in November last year with an HND in Creative Media Moving Image (TV & Film Production), and is a former Wallace High School pupil, finishing her year at Salford University where she has topped up her HND to a degree. Stacey has also worked for Stellify Media, and has four TV credits for ‘Parents Evening’.

The writer and director of the film Michael Murray-Draine said: “It was bitter sweet not being able to have the night of celebration, but overall the joy of winning overpowers that. Our tutors were super supportive and enthusiastic about the idea, when we presented it to them. They were very happy with the script from the get go, it really gave the team a big boost in confidence. We wanted the film to feel like two separate worlds, with the restaurant having a slow pace with many different camera angles and low lighting, while we wanted the kitchen to feel more chaotic, with each scene shot in one take. We even ended up using two cinematographers for each location to really make sure there was a visible difference. What really makes the film is our cast, as everyone is an industry professional which made working together so easy.”
