Lisburn children's event celebrates diversity

Old Warren Primary School in Lisburn was the venue for a special International Childrens Day event on Saturday, June 4.

Supported by the Housing Executive and Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council, the event featured activities for all age groups, but particularly children.

There were African drums, Chinese dance and a special performance from Lisburn Bands Forum, as well as sports activities, arts and crafts workshops and food from around the world on offer.

Organiser Joanna Jarzynska, from The Welcome Project, based in Laganview Enterprise Centre, said; “Lisburn and Castlereagh has the second largest population of people from black and ethnic minority communities in Northern Ireland, with over 3,000 residents.

“We are committed to embracing the diversity and promoting good relations in our city. This was a wonderful event and I would like to thank all those supporting the occasion and those taking part – everyone embraced the spirit of the day.

“It was a great way of exposing people to new cultures and helping to promote understanding in the area.”

Emma Galway from the Housing Executive, said; “We were delighted to support this initiative and we commend those involved for the breadth of activities on offer.

“It was amazing to see so many children enjoying themselves so congratulations to The Welcome Project.”
