ENJOY an evening with singer/songwriter Sarah McQuaid at the Island Arts Centre in Lisburn on Friday November 28.
Sarah McQuaid.
Born in Madrid and raised in Chicago, singer/guitarist and songwriter Sarah lived in Ireland from 1994 to 2007.
Dur
ing this time she reguarly toured and was also a folk music columnist for the Evening Herald and a contributor to Hot Press magazine.
In 1997 Sarah recorded her debut solo album, 'When Two Lovers Meet'. It was re-released in 2007.
Sarah's ensuing nationwide tour was highly successful and tracks from the album were included in FolkCast's 'artists of the year' podcast and in Mike Ganley's Top Ten picks for 2007.
Now based in Cornwall, Sarah has just recorded a new album - I Won't Go Home 'Til Morning.
The long-awaited second album from an American singer, songwriter and guitarist rapidly making her mark on the English acoustic scene, this is an elegant exploration of her roots (both musical and familial), ranging from upbeat tracks steeped in the Appalachian tradition to others perfect for mellow, late-night listening -- all delivered by a voice that's been likened to "matured cognac".
Eagerly anticipating a return to her adopted home, Sarah said: "I am delighted to be coming back over to Ireland. I have been over a few times since I moved to Cornwall and its always lovely to go back."
The Lisburn audience will be in for a treat as Sarah plays tracks from her two albums - one consisting of Irish-inspired tunes and the other taking her back to her American roots. "My first album was immersed in Irish traditional music, which I still love - but this time round, I felt the need to revisit the Southern Appalachian songs and tunes that I learned during my childhood," she explained.
"My mother was my introduction to folk music. She never performed professionally, but she had a lovely natural style of singing and guitar playing," she continued.
"All the songs on this recording have powerful emotional resonances for me, and all are connected in one way or another to my mother. Looking back, I guess it was kind of a cathartic process."
And looking to the future, Sarah hopes to take the inspiration for her new album from her new home .
"I have an idea to do an album of Cornish songs, which are very similar to Breton music," she added.
However, having just begun a new tour, her next album could be some way off.
Sarah will be taking to the stage of the Island Arts Centre on Friday November 28 at 8pm.
