LOOKING through some old magazines lately I came across an Ulster star 50th Anniversary edition and on page 13 there was a reproduction of the front page of the Star dated 9th November 1957 stating 'Four year plan will mean that Lisburn is on road to Nowhere'.
Reading further it states that the opening of the highway will tend to take business away from Lisburn town and it may become a backwater, and here we are 52 years on singing the same old song about a John Lewis store locating at Sprucefield taking
business away from Lisburn city.
Sprucefield has been developed over the years housing many multi national stores which have brought much business and employment to Lisburn city. The building of a John Lewis store and units would initially give many needed jobs in the construction industry, employment to staff when opened, employment to suppliers and freedom of choice to customers with free and ample car parking space which is very limited in Lisburn itself at the present time.
It would also be without hassle from traffic wardens who are not an asset to business in Lisburn.
So when are the authorities going to waken up and smell the coffee and allow this development to get under way, especially in this time of a need for jobs and a cash injection into the community of Lisburn.
We also have a similar situation of development at the Maze but that is another story for another day.
