Two Mervyn’s are too good in Winter League final

MERVYN Hewitt and Mervyn Law proved to be too good for Jim Bell and Brian Patterson in the final of the Lisburn Winter League match play competition. They played almost flawless golf to finish the match on the 8th green when their better ball score was one under par.

After winning the second, Mervyn Law birdied the third to go two ahead. Another birdie at the short sixth put his side three ahead. Brian won the seventh to reduce the arrears but Mervyn Hewitt’s par five at the eight was sufficient to end the contest.

Head greenkeeper Robert Nelson opened the course for play on Saturday morning after some areas had been under water on Thursday. Heavy rain followed the freezing conditions in the earlier part of the week which prevented the water getting away. Luckily the thaw on Friday night was sufficient to make the course playable. The fairways were still damp but many competitors spoke highly about the good condition of the greens.

Chris Warwick (20) was top scorer in last Saturday’s stableford with 25 points. He won Section 3 by one point from Norman Lambe (21) with Dale Myles (25) third.

Jim McBratney (16) won Section 2 with 23 points. Ray Rankin (16) finished second, one point in arrears with Alan Little (16) third.

Henry McMahon (11) was a clear winner of Section 1. He finished two ahead of Greg Ferris (13) and Gavin Hawkins (9) with Gregg’s better finish securing second place.
