Thirds’ winning streak continues

LISNAGARVEY Thirds hosted Newry Seconds at Comber Road at the weekend with a huge opportunity to put themselves a significant distance away from the relegation zone.

A game expected to be a physical encounter began with Garvey playing all the hockey and the rewards came immediately.

They found themselves 1-0 up after five minutes when Daniel Nelson showed great skill to volley the ball into the bottom right hand corner after some good build up play from Garvey.

Minutes later and Garvey’s pressure was still too much for the Newry side to cope with. Garvey showed their class again and it was Nelson who netted his second of the game, with what was probably a better finish than the first.

After receiving the ball five yards out from the goal Nelson calmed dragged the ball past the out coming keeper and slotted it into the net on his reverse.

The game then began to be more of a midfield battle and Newry’s physical side shone through and prevented Garvey from playing their natural free flowing hockey at times. As Garvey’s number of chances being created dropped Newry capitalized. A crashed ball from the Newry right winger was deflected into the bottom corner giving the ever impressive Garvey keeper Gavin Adams no chance.

Shortly after the half time whistle came with Newry right back in the game.

The second half began as the first finished with neither side looking overly creative however Garvey seemed to be the more comfortable of the two sides and dominated possession throughout the second half.

Chances began to fall to the Hillsborough side as Neil Harbinson came close with a reverse stick shot, however the game still remained in the balance.

With 15 minutes to go Lisnagarvey were awarded a short corner which proved to be a pivotal point in the game. Captain Seb Buser put the game beyond doubt with a drag flick slotted into the bottom left to ensure a crucial three points were picked up.

The Thirds have now picked up four wins in a row and are showing the capabilities to continue this impressive run.
