Sixths end poor run with fine home win

GARVEY Sixths ended their poor run of form when they travelled to the Showgrounds at Ballymena last Friday night. They won comfortably by 3 goals to nil and gained a lot of confidence from the result.
The Sixths went ahead midway through the first half when Matthew Tyson found the net after a penalty corner had been almost wasted with a poor stop; he regained control and beat the keeper with a good shot.
Tommy Crockett, missing from the team with his penalty corner skill, added goal number two but again the ball did not go directly into the Ballymena net; it went in via a deflection off a defender but the goal put Garvey deservedly ahead by a two goal margin.
Leading by 2-0 at the interval, Garvey made sure of the points when Mark Murray worked his way through the Ballymena defence towards the end of the second period and scored the third and decisive goal with a well placed shot to give the Sixths a much needed victory.
The Sevenths did not have the same success when they played against PSNI Seconds at Stormont. They were defeated by 4 goals to 1 but were facing a strong side which never let the Sevenths into the game.
The home side went in front after just 10 minutes but Johnny Poots replied for Garvey only a few minutes later but that was good as it got as the PSNI rattled in three more goals before the half time interval.
There was no more scoring in the second 35 minutes which gave the Sevenths a lot of credit for their solid defending but they could not alter the score and the home team were worthy winners by 4 goals to 1; a rare defeat for the very consistent Sevenths.
