Seconds earn hard fought win

LISNAGARVEY SECONDS 4 COOKSTOWN 1

GARVEY Seconds continued their recent run of good results with a well deserved victory against a resolute Cookstown side.

Garvey started the stronger of the two sides, creating a number of chances in the opening quarter. The sustained pressure paid off after 15 minutes when Rob Cummins converted an opportunity from close range. The goal seemed to spur the Cookstown team on and it was the visitors who finished the half on top. The Garvey defence held strong, however, to ensure Garvey took a one goal advantage into the break.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with Garvey creating the better chances and after 10 minutes Garvey doubled their lead when Ian Davidson arrived unmarked at the back post to deflect a Whitten cross into the net. Again the Cookstown side reacted well to conceding and with 15 minutes left on the clock pulled a goal back to make it 2-1. However, almost immediately Garvey regained their two goal advantage when James Dowling dribbled past two Cookstown defenders and slipped the ball past the oncoming keeper.

The game was then sealed a few minutes later when good pressure by the Garvey midfield led to Cummins providing the assist to Phil Stirling who finished from a tight angle. Garvey could have extended their lead further in the final minutes of the game but had to settle for the four goals.

Garvey must be happy with what was a hard fought victory. The Garvey forwards were a constant threat throughout with schoolboys Morris and Allen putting in mature performances in midfield.
