Delight as South ladies get first win

SOUTH ANTRIM LADIES FIRSTS 4 INSTONIANS FIRSTS 1

SOUTH Antrim Ladies have been fighting hard to find that first win of the season in this challenging Senior League. With improved performances over the past few weeks, attitudes changed when the Ladies stepped foot on Instonians’ grounds late Friday Night, determined for that win.

High energy flowed throughout the squad and from the whistle South took charge, pressurising the oppositions defence and creating early chances with very close misses from Ruth Young.

South continued to dominate play with Danielle Heasley making excellent runs up the right wing and linking up well with Charis Seeds to make a few shots on target. Instonians had some attacks but nothing that the defence couldn’t have coped with and Jo Clarke making excellent tackles causing frustrations to the opposition.

It wasn’t until late into the first half that Claire Louise White perfectly positioned herself in the circle to tap a rebound into the net achieving her first goal of this season. Feeding off this high, South produced even better play into the second half and tireless efforts came from Jill Cooper to keep the ball in South’s possession with great linking from Anna Dornan to Jen Morrow up front. Jen Morrow not yet able to score her debut goal this season, took on the keeper one-on-one and slotted a fantastic goal past the keeper to make the score 2-0.

Shortly after, South gained a penalty corner and as practiced on Thursday night’s training sessions, Charis Seeds thundered another goal past the Instonians’ keeper. But the Instonians didn’t give up; they fought hard, gained penalty corners in which the South defence batted away but Instonians produced great play to find a gap in defence to smash one past into the South’s goals.

Elated from her first goal, Jen Morrow was thirsty for more. A great pass from Alannah Richardson found Jen Morrow in the circle where she confidently scored her second goal. With minutes to go, South continued to attack, never giving up and when that final whistle blew, the ladies were ecstatic with the final score of 4-1 – their first win of the season.

Everyone played a fantastic game and South are looking forward to keeping this momentum going throughout the rest of the season.

Player of the Match deservingly went to Jennifer Morrow who very nearly scored a hat-trick.
