Top tip pays off for Billy at Lisburn

After receiving a golfing tip from his friend Tommy Beattie, Billy Dougherty (23) played his best golf of the Winter League.

A birdie at the short fourth followed by a par at the fifth made two four pointers and helped a total of 25 points for the best score last Saturday.

It was sufficient to win Section Three. George McMullan (28) ran up a double bogey at the last to finish one point in arrears. Wesley Haslett (28) was third on 23.

Nine holes in three over par gave Michael Rooney (19) 24 points which clinched Section Two. Mark Jamieson (19), Colin Jeffers (15) and Seamus McGuckin (18) finished one point behind. A birdie at the final hole gave Mark second.

A level par front nine gave Stephen Stewart (9) top place in Section One with 24. Four players finished on 23: Stephen Leathem (9), Gary Campbell (6), Andrew Parr (8) and Richard McDermott (6). Stephen’s birdie at the final hole clinched second.

With one week left, Stephen Shaw leads Section One with 86 points. He is closely followed by Ian Sayers and Ben Kirkwood. Matt Lyness and Stephen Stewart are two points in arrears.

Colin Jeffers has a one point advantage over Stephen Wilkinson in Section Two. Gavin Hawkins is a further two points behind.

Mervyn Hewitt and Chris Warwick lead Section Three with 88 points. David Wightman is next on 84.
