Mayor holds reception for members of Taekwondo Club

The Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett recently held a reception for Lisburn Taekwondo Club to mark the sporting achievements of its members.

Some 25 club and committee members visited the council on Saturday February 6, where they were given a tour of the council offices.

The club has many award winning members, including coach Peter Stewart who has won Commonwealth Silver in 2014, three gold and one silver at the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) in 2015, three gold at the WPFG in 2013 and Irish gold and bronze and NI gold and bronze.

Peter has also been awarded Children’s Coach of the Year and is the current Sports Personality of the Year for Lisburn & Castlereagh City.

Present at the reception were a number of the young athletes that are committed to the sporting discipline of Taekwondo. Collectively this group of talented young people hold:

• Three British National Gold Medals

• Four British National Silver Medals

• Three NI Gold Medals

• One NI Silver Medal

• One NI Bronze Medal

• Two Irish Gold Medals

• Three Irish Silver medals

• One Irish Bronze Medal

• 12 gold, 12 silver and 21 bronze competition medals nationally and internationally.

The Mayor expressed his congratulations to the award winning squad and wished them all the best in their sporting futures.

Coach Peter Stewart said: “It was great to be both invited and acknowledged by the Mayor Thomas Beckett.

“I had no idea I was going to be presented with a glass trophy to acknowledge my success and dedication to Taekwondo, which was very much appreciated.

“The kids and adults had a great time, we were greeted, had lunch and a great tour of the council chambers and the Mayor’s parlour.

“The Mayor had so much time with the kids and made everyone feel so welcome. It was a great day for the club.”
