Excitement builds for Dunmurry GC Winter League finals

After one of the wettest winters in recent times, the Dunmurry GC Winter League at last reached the knockout stages last weekend.

However, due to the Winter League dinner being held tomorrow (Saturday), the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the morning and afternoon sections, both had to be played.

AFTERNOON SECTION

The game of the weekend came in the afternoon section quarter final when Billy McAuley and Roger Doherty won on the fourth extra hole against Gordon Wheeler and Tom Bell.

In the semi-final, McAuley and Doherty kept their good form beating Kyle Drury and Paul McMeekin two and one, who had beaten Stevie McCollum and Nigel Rosbotham on the first extra hole in the earlier game.

On the other side of the draw, Vice Captain Trevor Lamont and Robin Arnold had an easy passage into the semis, defeating Roy Donnan and Dessie Houston five and four.

They continued to impress in the semi-final defeating Dessie Marley and Connor Appleyard four and two. In the quarter finals, Marley and Appleyard defeated Liam McCartney and Noel Magill.

The games for the minor places resulted in victories for McCollum and Rosbotham over Donnan and Houston, and McCartney and Magill over Wheeler and Bell, both on the 18th green.

Final – Lamont and Arnold v McAuley and Doherty.

Third place – Marley and Appleyard v Drury and McMeekin.

Fifth place – McCollum and Rosbottam v McCartney v Magill.

Seventh place – Donnan and Houston v Wheeler and Bell.

MORNING SECTION

In the Morning section, Ward Orr and Alan Moore needed tie hole victories to reach the final. Earlier they defeated Arthur Scott and Victor Toland on the 13th and repeated the result in the semi-final defeating defending champions John Bennett and Tony Higginson.

Higginson and Bennett also needed extra holes to see off the challenge of Brian Burns and Larry O’Kane in the quarter finals.

Father and son pairing Colm McKenna Senior and Junior were in impressive form reaching the final with convincing wins over Gerry Higgins and R Strain and then Sam Blackley and Lawrence Patterson in the semi. Blackley and Patterson earlier defeated Stanley Walker and David Lowham.

In the games to establish the fifth place, Walker and Lowham defeated Burns and O’Kane and Higgins and Strain defeated Scott and Toland.

Final – Moore and Orr v McKenna and McKenna.

Third place – Bennett and Higginson v Blackley and Patterson.

Fifth place – Walker and Lowham v Strain and Higgins.

Seventh place – Burns and O’Kane v Scott and Toland.
