Mervyn Hewitt was the top scorer in round two of the Lisburn GC Winter League.

The 22 handicapper fired in an outstanding 25 points for the nine hole course, enough to take top prize in the high handicap section.

The improvement in the weather was very welcome and as many as 118 Lisburn members took to the course in a quest for a prize.

Winter greens were in use at the first and sixth holes and normal greens for the other seven holes.

In the low handicap section, Michael McCaughan (10) started off with two birdies. He bogeyed holes seven and nine but pars at the rest helped him to a 36 gross and 23 points to take first place.

A total of eight players had 22 points with Stephen Shaw (5) taking second place on countback with his three at the ninth enough to edge out first round winner Ian Sayers (11).

The other six players on 22 points scored seven or more of their points in the first three holes.

In the middle handicap section, three players were tied on 24 points. Jim Cunningham (18) took first place on the countback over the last six holes. Sam Moore (19) scored a par at the last to take second place from Norman Briggs (18) who finished with a bogey.

In the high handicap section, Billy Hawthorne (28) kept up his good form from the pre-Christmas tournament, with a gross 42 and 26 points. Mervyn Hewitt (22) was a clear second with 25 points. John Millward (23) and Chris Scott (22) each had 23 points.

As many as 18 players managed to score a two. One of them recorded a brace of twos and Paul Smyth got his two at the fifth hole after pitching his approach shot on the apron and running it into the hole.

Leslie Cross and Stephen Stewart, meanwhile, recorded eagles by holing out for a three at the first whilst Ricky Leathem, David Mercer and Kevin Smyth each recorded a three at the seventh hole.

Stephen Shaw (5) had four birdies in the nine holes played.

SENIORS’ JANUARY OUTING

The January outing for the Lisburn GC Seniors took place on Monday 25th January.

The best score was returned by Jim Burns (14) with 25 points. Second was John Hutchinson (22) on 24 points. Third place went to Norman Briggs (18) on 23 points and in fourth place was Tom Roe (24) also with 23 points.
