Magee back in the ring for Euro title bout

LISBURN boxer Brian Magee will be back in the ring in the New Year when he will take on Dane Mads Larsen for the vacant European super-middleweight title on January 30 in Aarhus, Denmark.

Magee has a second shot at the European belt, having lost a highly controversial decision to Vitali Tsypko four years ago in Germany.

It has been almost a year since Magee was in the ring when he won the vacant British super-middleweight title in Brentwood, England in December 2008.

A series of cancellations to his British title defence fights has meant that Magee has been waiting for this opportunity all year.

"I've been ticking over fitness wise as I had an idea a fight would be coming up, but there will be a lot of hard work to be done between now and January," said Brian.

Magee's opponent Larsen, is well known in boxing circles, having won 50 of his 52 bouts and Magee has nothing but respect for the Dane.

"He's already been European champion and along with Mikkel Kessler is the most famous boxer to come out of Denmark so he is well respected," said Magee.

"It is a 20,000 seat arena," he said, "so it is going to be a big night. I don't mind travelling, some boxers don't travel well, but I have fought all over the world and I have been to Denmark to spar with Kessler. The temperature is pretty much the same as it is here, it would be different if it was somewhere I had to acclimatize to and the weather system was different."

Magee has the opportunity to become only the 11th Irishman to win such a belt and it will prove to be a bumper pay day for the Lisburn man, with a reputed six figure sum - the biggest of his career - on offer.

"There is big money for a Euro title, I'm very happy," said Magee. "It is nice to be fighting on these terms."

Magee also has hopes of securing a fight on home soil should all go to plan in Denmark.

"That would be the definite plan, if not in Belfast then in the UK for definite," he said. "The shop window will be open then for a World title. I may do a couple of defences, but if something comes along faster then I would take it. The top six are tied up in the Round Robin so fingers crossed I'll be up there."
