Unbeaten run continues for Garvey’s Fifths

NORTH DOWN THIRDS 0

LISNAGARVEY FIFTHS 0

GARVEY Fifths continued their unbeaten run in 2013 with a well deserved win away to North Down. While the rest of the country were building snowmen, the mighty 5’s

battled the elements to make the journey to Comber to take on the leagues’ second place team.

The return of Bonar, Nye and Mulholland doubled the teams average age but the experience paid off as successive attacks lead to the first goal. A well worked move down the left side through Andy Watt and Peter Dobbin allowed Jonny Wilson to proceed from the depths of defence to strike from close range to net his second goal in as many games.

The Ffiths continued to play some of the best hockey of their season with well worked moves down both flanks. This lead to several penalty corners and finally Lisnagarvey’s second goal just before half time. With Wilson now in a midfield role, his offensive tendencies continued to trouble the North Down defence. After laying the ball back to Bonar, a quick shot was well saved by the home teams keeper, but it was Jamie Mulholland who pounced on the rebound to slot the ball home. 2 - 0 at half time.

Confidence was high going in to the second half but it was the Comber men that came out strong and caused the Lisnagarvey defence some problems. With some excellent saves from Fraser Rodgers, the Garvey defence stood strong and managed to keep a clean sheet.

A great performance from everyone and a big thank you to Finn McCrory for umpiring on a cold wintry afternoon. The Fifths are off to Cookstown next week to try to keep their winning run going.
