Sixths ease relegation worries with Newry win

NEWRY THIRDS 0 LISNAGARVEY SIXTHS 2

GARVEY Sixths were very fortunate to play their match at Newry on Saturday. One of the few places in Ulster not to be affected by the downfall of snow, the team recorded a fine 2-0 and took another step away from relegation difficulties.

A very tight first half saw little between the teams but after 20 minutes, the seal was broken when Mark Murray scored with a well placed penalty corner to give the Sixths an edge against a very competitive home side. A couple of chances fell to the younger Murray, Sean but his reverse stick shots were both off the target.

The second half saw some great defending by the stubborn Garvey team with keeper James Milliken in good form and well supported by Tommy Crockett, Tim Acheson and Robert Bowden.

The decisive goal of the game fell to the visitors midway the second period when Mark McNellis did the hard work before Sean Murray finished off the move with a neat deflection past the Newry keeper to give the Sixths an excellent victory over a strong Newry team which made it very difficult for Garvey for the whole 70 minutes.
