Friends swimmers make a splash at championships

Friends' Year 8 pupils recently enjoyed success at the Ulster Schools' Minor Swimming Championships, held in Ballymena.

YEAR 8 pupils at Friends’ enjoyed success at the recent Ulster Schools’ Minor Swimming Championships, held in Ballymena.

In the individual events there were gold medals for Victoria Hunter in the 50m Butterfly and 100m Individual Medley, Philip Cox in the 50m backstroke and Jamie Allison in the 100m individual medley. Jamie also won silver medals in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

In the girls’ 100m individual medley, Zoe Dickey won silver and Rosie Collins bronze. There were bronze medals also for Charlie Kenny in the 50m butterfly and Cameron Loan in the 50m backstroke, with Charlie also achieving fifth place in the 100m individual medley and Cameron fifth in the 50m butterfly.

There were strong performances too from Jack Fleming, fourth in 50m breaststroke and fourth in the 100m individual medley, and Robbie Johnston, sixth in the 50m backstroke.

Year 8 girls Zoe Dickey and Rosie Collins were joined by Robyn Beattie and Ellie Bamford from Friends’ Prep to win bronze in both the 200m medley and freestyle relays.

The boys’ 200m freestyle team of Robbie Johnston, Cameron Loan, Philip Cox and Jamie Allison won gold while Philip and Jamie were joined by Charlie Kenny and Jack Fleming for the 200m medley relay and another Gold was claimed.

This is a fantastic achievement for Friends’ School swimmers who have all qualified for the Irish Finals in March.
