Thompson joins the ‘200’ club

PETER Thompson’s two Irish Cup goals last week for Linfield brought his career tally to 200 and the news is there is more to come.

“I’m delighted to have reached 200 goals but now that that’s out of the road, I’m more interested in the next set of goals because at Linfield the pressure is to keep producing the goods,” said Peter.

“Strikers are always more interested in the next goal rather than the last one, so as long as I can keep my form and stay injury free, I’m looking ahead to trying to score more goals and hopefully, bring more success to the club.”

Peter will be looking to begin his next 100 goals in the game with Dungannon Swifts at Windsor Park on Saturday.

“I am thrilled for Peter. To reach the 200 milestone is a remarkable feat and I’m sure we will be seeing many, many more goals from him,” said boss David Jeffrey.

After Dungannon, the Blues face a real test of their title credentials with league games against Coleraine (a), Crusaders (h), Portadown (a) and Cliftonville (a).

“This is going to be a massive month for us,” added Jeffrey. “I took a little time to look at the next 5 or 6 games and it is going to be very tough.

“Even though things are ticking along nicely that can all change very quickly. We have Dungannon at home on Saturday and in order to claim three points we need to be at our very best and apply ourselves with the task in hand.”

Lisburn Distillery meet formidable opponents in Cliftonville at home, but a game in which they have nothing to lose as the Reds will start as favourites.

Leaving last week’s cup exit aside, the Whites did win their last two league games. Boss John Cunningham will hope to push the visitors all the way.
