Rangers crumble in second half

Ballymacash Rangers travelled to Larne last Saturday to play the Inver Park side in Round 3 of the Steel & Sons Cup, but there was to be no ‘cup upset’ from the local side as they crashed out of the cup by a 6-0 scoreline, the Championship 1 side showing their superiority all over the park.

The home side started off at a high tempo, and missed a few clear-cut opportunities to open the scoring as Ballymacash struggled to get into the game, although nerves seemed to play a part in the opening exchanges.

Rangers did well to keep their opponents out, by eventually settling themselves somewhat, and managing to create the odd rare attack, but their frequent giving possession away and defensive errors proved costly as the home side took a deserved lead after 35 minutes.

Ballymacash did well to keep their opponents to this one goal margin to half-time, and it was thought that if they could hold them for as long as possible in the second-half, then the home side may become frustrated and Ballymacash could counter and get an equaliser. Unfortunately the Larne side had other ideas as they scored two goals inside four minutes of the half-time whistle, which knocked most of the heart out of the Lisburn side.

Worse was to follow for Ballymacash, with 60 minutes played, as they were reduced to 10 men when defender Waite was sent off after handling the ball on the goal-line, the resulting penalty converted by the home team.

An avalanche of goals was now predicted as Larne looked to pile more agony onto their Mid-Ulster League opponents, however, the introduction of James Campbell, D. Magee and M.Boyd added a little resistance. The home side pounced on a few errors, which resulted in a further two goals.
