Locals all set for Irish Cup day
THE focus of attention for local football fans on Saturday turns to the Irish Cup.
Two local amateur league sides are hoping they can be in the hat for the draw come 5.00pm on Saturday night, Derriaghy CC and Dunmurry Rec.
Last season Dunmurry Rec caused a major shock by earning a replay with holders Linfield after a drama filled 1-1 draw at Windsor Park.
They travel to Newbuildings United who they beat 4-3 on penalties last weekend in the Intermediate Cup.
Derriaghy make the long trip to Castlederg to take on Dergview, a tough task, but one they are looking forward too.
For senior sides Lisburn Distillery and Linfield they too want a good cup run.
Favourites Linfield have the easier job as they face Ballyclare Comrades at home. However, fans will recall that lucky escape the Blues had earlier in the year when they just held out to win 6-4 in extra time at Dixon Park in the League Cup.
Glenn Ferguson makes a swift return to New Grosvenor, having just left to take over at Ballymena he is back to try and get one over on his former club.
“It is good to get a break from the league and aim for a cup run. Every team goes into it with a clean slate and ambitions of doing well,” said Whites boss John Cunningham. “We have home advantage so we have to make that count.”
