Armagh ousted by rock-steady Rockmount team

Michael McCormick’s Rossmore Cup team saw off County Armagh to reach the final four after a 5-3 overall victory.

The first leg was played at County Armagh Golf Club at Rockmount on Sunday 20 July in the first leg of their last eight match.

Seasoned campaigners Stevie Walker and Colin Marshal were out first they combined very well to post the best score on the day a six and five win.

Gary Gorman and Frank Wallace were out second and kept the momentum in Rockmount’s favour with a three and one win.

Father and son duo William and Reece Wilson had a very tough battle, in a match that was always close. In the end, the spoils were shared.

Last out was Danny Montgomery and Neil Gowdy, their match was also close but Danny and Neil edged it two and one.

At the half way stage, the match stood Rockmount three and half to County Armagh’s half.

Sunday 27 July was the date for the second leg at County Armagh Golf Club. Some changes in the pairings were necessary but team captain was able to put out Stevie and Colin out first, following their big win at home there was high hopes they would bring home the one point necessary but in a turn of fortune they lost six and four.

Out second, Neil Gowdy was paired with Joe Forde and they too could not take the team over the winning line they lost three and two.

Father and son duo William and Reece again combined well and kept their match very tight. They were all square at the 17th when the elusive point needed was secured by Frank Wallace and new partner Leslie Anderson.

Frank and Leslie, out last, combined well but also played some very good golf to win their match four and three.

The overall match score was 5-3 in Rockmount’s favour.

JUNIORS: ROCKMOUNT CHALLENGE CUP

The winners of the annual Rockmount Challenge Cup for juniors this year held at Rockmount on Thursday 24 July were Clandeboye Golf Club with a total of 143 points.

The individual scores were Darren Scott (32 pts), Karl Eccles (37pts), Conor Hagan (32pts) and Jack Johnston (42pts).

In second place with a total of 142 points were Belvoir Golf Club and in joint third place with 141 points were Rockmount Golf Club and Dunmurry Golf Club.
