A PARTY of 21 boys and two staff from Dunmurry High School have recently returned home after a five day football trip to Wigan.
The group, which was accompanied by two community police officers from the PSNI, who helped to organise the tour, played two matches, winning one and losing the other.
During their stay the group watched the Everton v Chelsea match at Goodison Park and were fortunate enough to meet Jamie Rednapp.
They also went on a guided tour of Anfield where they were shown the dressing rooms, directors' box and post-match interview room, familiar to anyone who has ever watched Match of the Day.
In addition, they were guests at Rosebridge High School where they not only tried out their skills at cricket and basketball but also attended classes on the danger of possessing knives.
The highlight of the tour, however, was the visit to the JJB Stadium to watch 'The Latics' take on Spurs.
One pupil, in particular, will never forget this occasion, for Gareth Robinson from Year 10 was chosen to be Wigan's mascot for the day and led the team out onto the pitch along with one of its brightest stars, captain Emerson Boyce.
After the match which ended in a 1-1 draw, the pupils met a number of players including Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon and Robbie Keane, providing the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Before leaving for home Michael Hill was presented with the Player of the Tour award with Stephen Boyd picking up the award for Top Goal Scorer and Michael McAllister being named Man of the Tour.
Mr Watson, who teaches PE at Dunmurry, and was in charge of the trip, was delighted with its success.
"This was our fourth trip to Wigan", he said, "and once again we were well looked after and made to feel very welcome.
The pupils were commended on their behaviour everywhere they went and were excellent ambassadors for the school and Northern Ireland. I was very proud of them.
This has been the ideal way to end off a very successful season which has seen the Year 9 and 10 teams winning their leagues."
