Passing of talented teacher

Eamonn O’Faoigain (53) who had worked at the school for 31 years was laid to rest on Sunday. He died on Wednesday.

Mr O’Faoigain who was originally from Lurgan was a traditional singer, teacher and Irish speaker. He was buried at Milltown Cemetery on Sunday.

The short service was conducted in both English and Irish at St Mary’s Church in Chapel Lane, Belfast - the same church where Mr O’Faogain sang every Sunday and directed the choir for more than three decades.

Mr O’Faoigain represented Ireland at the Lorient Festival with Ceoltoiri Rosa and also sang for the President of Ireland.

St Colman’s Primary School released a statement paying tribute.

It read: “Mr.Éamonn Ó’Faogáin has been a valued member of staff at St Colman’s for 31 years. He played a massive part in the whole school community.

“Éamonn was a gifted, hard-working, selfless and generous teacher. He nurtured the individuality of every child he taught. He used his wealth of talents to encourage, motivate and to enrich the lives of everyone he met.

“Éamonn was a talented singer, musician and artist who had a particular devotion to Irish Culture. Éamonn loved Hurling and gave freely of his time to train and support his pupils. He loved the outdoors. Éamonn will be greatly missed by the entire school community.”
