Lisburn Probus Club backs local charities

The funds of two local charity groups received a boost recently from the members of Lisburn Probus Club.

At their last meeting, the members were pleased to make donations to the Down’s Syndrome Association and to Lisburn Outlook Club.

At the presentation, Probus President, Derek Shuter, referred to the Club’s tradition of making a charity donation each year.

He said: “A number of years ago, we initiated a charity auction. Each year’s President nominates a charity as the recipient of the proceeds.”

Past President, Freddie Hall, presented a cheque to Alan Bennett, a volunteer with the Down’s Syndrome Association in NI.

In accepting the cheque, Alan thanked Probus for their generosity. He went on to outline the work of the Down’s Syndrome Association.

“This donation will help the Association to continue its work ,” he said. “We provide information on all aspects of Down’s Syndrome and we support young people, parents and carers.”

A second cheque was presented to David Mann, Secretary of the Lisburn Outlook group.

David Mann expressed the gratitude of the Outlook Club. He explained that Outlook had been set up to provide social and recreational activities for those who are blind or partially-sighted.

“We hold coffee mornings which provide an opportunity for peer support and an exchange of information,” he said.

“We hold tandem sessions, we have a walking group and we arrange bespoke visits to places of interest and audio-described visits to cinema and theatre,” he continued.

Concluding, Derek Shuter emphasized the delight of Probus members that they were able to support the Down’s Syndrome Association and the Lisburn Outlook group.
