Unemployment falls in Lisburn

The figures for April 2016 show that Lisburn unemployment has continued to fall, with 1,759 people claiming unemployment benefit in the city.

This puts Lisburn in second place, just behind Mid Ulster which has a recorded 1,725 people claiming unemployment benefits.

The report shows that unemployment in Lisburn has fallen by 13% since last year, with 264 fewer people claiming benefits when compared to the same time last year,

The figures have also fallen when compared to the previous month, with a reduction of 4.8%.

In April 2% of the working age population in Lisburn was claiming unemployment benefits,

Lisburn’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Alexander Redpath, has welcomed the downward trend of statistics.

“I’m delighted to welcome another fall in unemployment in Lisburn,” said Mr Redpath. “Each new job has a life changing impact on a family in our City.

“However we cannot be complacent. Northern Ireland’s economy is growing more slowly than any other part of the UK.

“The new Northern Ireland Executive needs to focus on economic growth and job creation.

“Lisburn has been denied several chances to grow our economy due to dysfunctionality in the Executive. John Lewis and the Maze site are two obvious examples.

“Your city council will continue to work together to demand the best deal for Lisburn.”

In Northern Ireland as a whole, unemployment has continued to fall, with a reduction of just over 15% over the course of the year.

There are 37,494 people in Northern Ireland claiming unemployment benefits, which represents just over 3% of the working age population.
