Reacting to the death of the former Deputy First Minister, the Alliance Party representative said that while the Sinn Fein man’s IRA past cannot be forgotten, his efforts towards peace and stability must also be acknowledged.

Martin McGuinness lived a life of two halves, his early and latter years in complete contrast,” Mr Lunn said.

“He was one of many peacemakers around the world who came from a background of violence. I knew him for the last 10 years as an engaging, warm personality who worked hard for peace and stability in Northern Ireland and reached out to former adversaries, as did others.”

The Alliance man continued: “We cannot forget his past and may now never know the full extent of his involvement in armed conflict. I fully understand the inability of those who suffered to forgive but it is important that we recognise all contributions to our peace process and his place in history will be established as time passes.

“For my part I recognise his contribution and send my condolences to his wife and family.”
