Man dies in Saintfield car crash

A man died in a one-car crash on the Ballygowan Road at Saintfield on Monday.

The 44-year-old, named as Lee Drake from the Ballynahinch area, died shortly before 6.20am on Monday in a black Vauxhall Astra.

He was the sixth person to die on Northern Ireland’s roads in the first two weeks of the year.

On Saturday police had declared a road safety emergency given the number of deaths this month.

Police warned of icy conditions on many roads across Northern Ireland on Monday.

The Ballygowan Road at the junction of the Belfast Road and the Carsontown Road area reopened just after 1pm.

By 8am there had been reports of collisions on the A1 at Lisburn.

The A1 was reduced to one lane between Hillsborough Road roundabout and Sprucefield due to a collision, meaning there were delays towards Lisburn.

Police also advised of icy roads in Lurgan and Craigavon, and urged motorists to use “extreme caution”.

Motorists were warned to avoid the main Armagh to Newry Road after an incident on the Gosford Road, Markethill.
