Love food, hate waste

THE European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is happening this year in Northern Ireland between November 17 and 25 and Lisburn City Council is urging residents to ‘Love Food and Hate Waste’, as this is the theme of this year’s campaign.

During the week, Lisburn City Council will have an information stand on display in the Island Civic Centre where the public can get useful hints and tips on how they can make a difference. With this event being so close to Christmas, it is easy for everyone to help reduce food waste by following the tips on the love food hate waste website: http://ni.lovefoodhatewaste.com/content/christmas-savings-start-today-your-daily-countdown

Speaking about the campaign, the Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Andrew Ewing said: “At the council we are proud to support the European Week for Waste Reduction and I would encourage everyone in the council area to get involved. Wasting food costs the average household £480 a year, rising to £680 for a family with children, the equivalent of around £50 a month. Wasted food is clearly wasted resources. With rising food prices, reducing the amount of food waste you throw away really can help you save money every week; we could all do with that extra cash in the run up to Christmas.

“As individuals we can all make a real difference when it comes to reducing the amount of food that ends up in the bin, whether it is by cooking the perfect portion, planning meals or storing foods to keep them fresher for longer. We also appreciate that there will always be some wastage with food and this is where your brown bin comes into use. For all those scraps that cannot be avoided feed them to your brown bin instead of filling up your landfill bin.”
