Teachers explore ‘symbols of identity’
TEACHERS from Lisburn and Belfast came together recently for a training workshop on ‘Exploring Symbols of Identity’.
They have been working with a local community relations project called ‘Change Makers’ which has been working extensively with ten schools in the areas for the past two years.
The training explored the history, origin and significance of flags in Northern Ireland, and also looked at different methodologies teachers could use to deliver flags and symbols lessons to their pupils.
Alison Dougherty and Brian Moore from Change Makers delivered the training, and have been working closely with their schools to embed the ethos of community relations throughout the school. All teachers attending the workshop received a fully kitted symbols box and a resource book for their school. These were funded by the IFI’s Sharing in Education programme, and NI Children’s Enterprise.
Schools represented at the workshop were Belfast Boys Model, Fort Hill Integrated College, Priory Integrated College, and St Louise’s College.
