ENTHUSIASTIC students from South Eastern Regional College’s Film School have recently put their presenting skills to the test and been given an insight into the world of media at a unique Presenting Workshop at UTV’s News Studio, Havelock House, Belfast.

Some twenty five Creative Media Production students from the College’s Lisburn Campus took part in the day-long workshop taught by UTV’s long-established news anchor, Paul Clarke, who is known for his energy and charisma on-screen.

The workshop was part of this year’s Cinemagic Festival and saw young people from all over Northern Ireland come together for the workshop which was designed to give students hands on experience of TV presenting. Students were treated to a question and answer session with the ‘behind the scenes team’, including the news editor, cameramen and sound production team.  Later, volunteers were given the opportunity to present a short bulletin alongside Paul, taking direction from the Gallery and using the auto-cue.

Campbell Millar SERC Creative Media Production lecturer explained how the workshop has benefited the students: “The workshop was a fantastic opportunity for the students. It was full of practical tips and the activities were highly interactive. The topics covered and the content was very relevant to today’s industry. The students were able to get a real insight into the industry and it was great for them to see for themselves how the skills they are learning now can be used in practice in the future. The feedback from the students was really encouraging, and we are hoping to host more events like this.”

Media student Barry Stephenson from Lisburn said: “The workshop was great as it provided a forum for me to pick up some useful hints and tips on TV presenting. It was also great to get the opportunity to network and meet with specialist advisers.”
