Runners under starters orders for park event

THE first weekly ‘Park Run’ event is coming to the City.

Lisburn City Council has teamed up with Park Run UK, the Public Health Agency (PHA) and Sport NI to offer a free, weekly, timed 5K event in Wallace Park, beginning Saturday March 2.

Park Run events are organised throughout the UK every Saturday morning, enabling runners to get together and exercise in a co-ordinated and social way.

The weekly run in Wallace Park will begin every Saturday at 9.30am.

There is no cost for participating in the park run. Anybody interested in coming along needs to initially register with Park Run UK. This can be done in advance by logging on to www.parkrun.org.uk.

This registration only needs to be competed once and will provide runners with a personalised code which gives access to the Park Run timing system.

There will also be an opportunity to register at Wallace Park. Those wishing to register on the day should meet at the Bandstand in Wallace Park at 9.00am.

The Park Run will begin at the Bandstand at Wallace Park at 9.30am and is suitable for runners of all levels, from the novice to the more experienced.

Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, Councillor Thomas Beckett said that it was great news that the Council could facilitate the first ever Park Run in the City.

He said: “The popularity of running is at an all time high and we want to ensure it continues to grow. We were initially approached by a number of local running enthusiasts who were keen for a Park Run event to be held in the City and the Council was delighted to accommodate them.”
