Reformed Church hosts meeting for Mission Africa

REV Sid and Jean Garland will give an illustrated talk on their 25 years working with Mission Africa at a meeting in Lisburn Reformed Presbyterian Church, Nettlehill Road, on Friday, November 9, at 8pm.

The mission was established by Belfast man, Samuel Bill, in 1887. It was originally known as the Qua Iboe Mission after the district in Nigeria where the work began.

For eleven years Sid was the minister of Finaghy Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Then in 1987 he and his wife responded to God’s call and went to Nigeria with their young family. Sid’s primary work in Nigeria has been in the area of theological education.

Rev Robert McCollum, a contemporary of Sid’s at Queen’s University, said: “Hundreds of Dr Garland’s former students are now working in churches, schools and bible colleges across Nigeria.”

His wife Jean, a nurse working in primary health care, has helped a number of organisations and churches pioneer their response to AIDS. Her book, ‘Aids is Real and It’s in Our Church’ has sold more than 100,000 copies and is in print in five languages.
