Initiative to tackle domestic violence welcomed

AN initiative to tackle domestic violence in the Colin area has been welcomed by junior minister Jennifer McCann.

The Colin Domestic Violence Forum has produced a protocol which aims to provide partner agencies and practitioners with an agreed method of working together, lawfully, responsibly and confidentially to tackle the incidences of domestic violence within the Colin community.

The forum has operated in Colin for over ten years and is made up of local community organisations within the Colin neighbourhood.

It provides a programme of public awareness raising events, training and services to families experiencing domestic violence.

Commenting on domestic violence and the shared protocol Ms McCann said: “Domestic violence is a serious crime which is never justified.

“It can have a significant impact on victims and their families and is totally unjustified.

“It is essential that women are safe and feel safe regardless of whether they are in the home or out in the community. I am encouraged and extremely supportive of this very practical protocol.”
