Concern over new cattery
RESIDENTS in the Carnbane Road area of Lisburn are petitioning against an application for a new cattery.
The residents are concerned that the proposal by Cats Protection for a new build cat adoption centre incorporating re-homing, administrative, education and veterinary facilities at 81 Carnbane Road will have major implications.
Maureen Roberts, member of the Carnbane Countryside Committee said the list of objectors was growing by the day.
She commented: “My husband and I canvassed every person on the Carnbane Road, they either didn’t know about it, didn’t realise the scale of it and if they did know, all without exception are objectors with their main concern being the volume of traffic on the road and the sheer scale of the project in this rural/farming area.”
Maureen continued: “The Carnbane Road is a narrow, rural country road incapable of coping with that volume of traffic.
“Meet a vehicle on the road, you have to pull over, also factor in that the road entrance/exit is on to one the busiest main arterial routes in Northern Ireland the A1 Dual Carriageway, a challenge to exit whether you heading north or south.”
Maureen believes an urban site would be more appropriate. “There is no reason why this ‘Northern Ireland Centre for Cats Protection’ should be sited in a rural setting.
“The cats don’t need to be in the country, they are only in the re-homing centres for a short space of time before the most of them are re-homed to live in cities, towns andbuilt up areas. There is an abundance of brown field sites which are more than suitable with public transport links and parking for example.”
