THE innovative “Balanceability” programme created by Cirencester mum Maria Yates has arrived in Lisburn.

The six week programme for 2 to 6 year olds, consists of activities and exercises that build confidence, spatial awareness and dynamic balancing skills enabling young people to cycle without the need for stabilisers.

Maria designed the programme to provide the perfect building block for the government’s bikeability scheme being used in schools across the UK and getting children cycling from a very young age.

The ‘Balanceability’ programme is aligned with the Government’s ‘Start Active, Stay Active’ policy which lays out new guidelines for increased physical activity for young children. It has been awarded a Kitemark by the Professional Development Board for Physical Education and is in line with the curriculum guidance for Foundation Stage pupils.

The programme is being supported by Sir Chris Boardman MBE who said about the programme  “Balanceability is the fundamental starting point for children’s cycling and an excellent opportunity to promote active lifestyles at the earliest possible age. I can see it also provides a natural lead into Bikeability for schools and I would encourage all schools to give children the opportunity to use balance bikes.”

The programme is being taught by local company Cycle Revolution headed by Gregory Massey. After completing our first level one course in Hillsborough we can testify to the confidence and skills the children have after just six weeks. The safe, positive and friendly environment provides a fun and rewarding learning experience for both children and carers.

We provide the bikes for the level 1 and the initial lessons for level2, aiming to get the children riding their own pedal bikes by the end of the level 2 programme.

Courses start from January 5 2pm for level 1 and 3pm for level 2 in Lisburn Leisureplex.
