The incident happened just before 4pm on Wednesday; police said a man called to the woman’s Upper Malone Road home claiming there was a fault with her neighbour’s water.
He said he needed to check her property before searching the rooms in the house.
After he had left it was discovered that a sum of money had been stolen.
Police said the woman was not injured but left very badly shaken.
