SDLP candidate for Lisburn South, Conor Quinn has said that the SDLP is the party that will offer people real change for the better in this months elections.
He was speaking after the launch of the SDLP’s Local Government and European election campaigns in the Waterfront Hall.
“It was great to be at the launch of our campaign in the Waterfront Hall on Wednesday,” said Mr Quinn. “Martin Schulz MEP, President of the European Parliament, gave a strong endorsement of the SDLP and our candidates in both the European and local government elections.
“These elections will be fought on the issues that affect hard pressed households, our farmers and fishermen, our young people and our small businesses.
“For too long, we have remained on the margins of power in Europe. Northern Ireland has lost the influence and strength that John Hume brought from the European Parliament. As an MEP, Alex Attwood will restore our influence at the heart of the Parliament. He will be a strong, Pro-European voice that will deliver the change that our people need and deserve.
“In Lisburn we are prioritising economic regeneration and jobs. The SDLP is putting the development of Lisburn city centre as a vibrant retail and entertainment centre at the core of our election campaign. We will also be ensuring that new planning and neighbourhood renewal powers of council will be community centred and community led.
“At the recent SDLP Youth Conference held in Lisburn a number of motions were passed in support of workers’ rights. The SDLP has already ensured that Belfast is the first Living Wage council in Ireland. We want to see this policy spread across our councils and we are committed to bringing similar proposals before Lisburn and Castlereagh council if elected.
“We believe that house building targets for social affordable homes must be doubled to tackle Lisburn’s housing crisis and will stand strong alongside the vulnerable in opposition to the bedroom tax and other punitive welfare reforms.
“These elections offer an opportunity for change. We have the chance to be strong in Europe and decisive at home. For change and for the better, we are encouraging voters to choose the SDLP and Alex Attwood on May 22.”
The SDLP is running four candidates in the Lisburn area. Nicola Turtle is running in Lisburn North, Councillor Pat Catney is standing again in Killultagh, Dee French will contest Downshire West and Conor Quinn is standing in Lisburn South.
