TWO of the proudest glasses wearers, are now one a step closer to winning the coveted Spectacle Wearer of the Year Award, with a grand prize of £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas.

Mary Devlin, (65), from Lisburn and Derek Dubery (48) from the Banbridge were chosen from hundreds of entries from across Northern Ireland.

Known as the Oscars of the glasses world, the awards celebrate specs wearers from the UK and Republic of Ireland, across four age categories: 15-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+.

The awards were launched by Girls Aloud singer and West End star Kimberley Walsh earlier this year, who either Mrs Devlin or Mr Dubery could meet at the awards ceremony if they triumph in their age category.

The awards will be held at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 7 October. All age category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.

Mrs Devlin is one of eight regional finalist chosen within Northern Ireland and is one of two for the 60+ age category, and Derek was chosen as a regional finalist for the 40-59 age category.

Natalie Latham, store director, Lisburn Specsavers store, says: “We would like to wish both Mrs Devlin and Mr Dubery all the very best for the final round of judging. It is such a great achievement to have reached the final eight within Northern Ireland. Both Mrs Devlin and Mr Dubery wear their Specsavers glasses well.”
