Leathem says well done to Legion

Alderman William Leathem has congratulated the Lisburn Royal British Legion on its fundraising efforts for the 2013 Poppy Appeal.

Speaking at the recent Lisburn City Council monthly meeting, Mr Leathem said: “I would like to publicly acknowledge the commitment and dedication of members of the local Royal British Legion in raising £44,000 over a three week period from late October to mid November.

“This would not have been possible without the valuable support of the local Lisburn community who purchased poppies, poppy pins or other memorabilia to raise money for our veterans and those who require financial support after being injured.

“It would be excellent if for the 2014 Poppy Appeal that a new fundraising total was set in the 100th Anniversary year of World War One.

“I hope that in coming months the Council in partnership with the Royal British Legion and Thiepval Barracks will be able to educate residents and visitors on World War One and mark their support and respect for those who lost their lives fighting for our country,” he concluded.
