‘Give Poots the Boot’ is the call that will echo down Castle Street today (Friday) when protest groups take to the streets of Lisburn to campaign against the Health Minister and Lagan Valley MLA.
The protest has been organised by the ICTU Youth Committee and is supported by Belfast Feminist Network, ICTU Womens, Retired Members, LGBT Committees, Lisburn Trades Council, Belfast Trades Council, Reclaim the Agenda, The Empty Purse Campaign and the Alliance for Choice.
It will be held outside Mr Poots’ DUP constituency office in the Old Town Hall in Castle Street at 12.30pm.
The protest groups are critical of the Health Minister’s stance on various issues, including gay adoption, abortion and the ban on blood donation by homosexuals, and are calling on him to resign his Ministerial position.
A spokesperson for the campaign said: “We feel it has become clear that the Minister can no longer impartially represent people who do not share his world view. Over the last number of weeks and months Health Minister Poots has outraged numerous sections of our society.
“These issues represent an attack on women, the elderly, the young, the gay community, trade unionists and the poor.
“If you care about equality, fairness and want to live in a secular pluralist society then please come along and support this protest. We deserve a health minister who will deliver for the whole of our society without prejudice.”
