There were celebrations at Ballymacward this week as it was revealed the area is to get a new landscaped community area and sports facility thanks to a £50,000 Alpha Programme.
The Rock Community Association (RCA) secured the funding for a new multi use games and communal area as well as car parking facility.
Provided by the Alpha Programme, which recycles tax credits from the Mullaghglass Landfill Site, the funding will help create the facility near Ballymacward Community Centre.
Raymond Jordan, Chairman of Rock Community Association said, “We are delighted to secure this funding from the Alpha Programme towards the improvement of this piece of waste ground.
“We will use the funding to create a small multi use games area, communal events area and car parking facilities.
“Our thanks go to everybody who has supported this project and of course the Alpha Programme for supporting it financially.”
Gary Flaherty, Landfill Manager at the Mullaghglass Landfill Site, said, “We are delighted the Rock Community Association has secured this funding from the Alpha Programme for their community amenity.
“We are delighted to provide this funding to create a valuable community facility for local residents and to help transform waste ground into a community asset.
“I wish everyone well with the future of their project and know this will provide a place where people can enjoy and respect the benefits of the outdoors and their environment around them.”
Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Margaret Tolerton commented, “It is great news that this local community group has been successful in securing funding for a new community space.
“The importance of people coming together within a community is significant whether it be at a sporting event or cultural event. I wish Rock Community Association every success with its new project that will facilitate the local community coming together on a regular basis.”
The Alpha Programme is managed by Groundwork NI and has already provided just under £1.6m in funding to 55 biodiversity and community based projects within ten miles of the Mullaghglass landfill site.
