Lisburn Mayor, Councillor
Andrew Ewing, is urging
bikers to saddle up for a memorial motorcycle run in honour of Hillsborough road racer Bruce Moulds.
Bruce (20) - a former pupil of Dromore High School and Lisburn SERC - was killed at the Walderstown races in Westmeath on July 14 last year.
A rising star of the motorsport world, the local rider was competing in the 125cc race when the accident happened; airlifted to Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital, he later died from his injuries.
Now, a little over a year after Bruce’s death, and with the support of the Moulds family, the newly elected Lisburn Mayor has announed the August 23 Motorcycle Run as one of the main fundraising events for his chosen charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Participants will depart Lagan Valley Island at 9am on Saturday morning, August 23, and travel to Newcastle, returning to Lisburn via Kilkeel, Rostrevor and Newry. Entry to the run costs £10 per person.
Councillor Ewing is encouraging would-be participants to also obtain sponsorship forms, available on the Council website - www.lisburncity.gov.uk - and from the mayor’s office.
“This is a special event for me,” he said. “It remembers a dear friend and I plan to raise money for a very worthwhile cause.
“I know how generous the motorcycling fraternity is and I encourage people participating in the run to seek sponsorship from family, friends and the local community.”
The mayor has enlisted the support of five-time Ulster grand Prix winner Phillip McCallen - whose business is based at Lisburn’s Lissue Industrial Estate - and that of GS Motorcycles in Hillsborough.
Both retailers will be offering special promotions and discounts to participants on the day of the event.
Mr Ewing said he was delighted both businesses were supporting the run, which will involve stops at the motorcycle premises on the route.
He added: “I would like to emphasise that this event will be well marshalled and safety is a top priority to ensure a safe and enjoyable run-out for riders.
“I would be honoured if local motorcycle clubs would join us in this event; clubs can register members through my office.”
