'˜Celebrations all round' at Downshire School

There were 'celebrations all round' in Downshire School, Carrickfergus, today (Thursday) as students arrived to receive 'excellent' A-level results, principal Jackie Stewart has said.

Non-selective post-primary schools report on the percentage of students who achieve two or more A*-E grades.

This year, Downshire students has achieved 100 per cent in this category.

Mrs. Stewart said that she is “delighted” to record that 92 per cent achieved two or more A*-C, with 46 per cent of our year group successfully obtaining 3 A*-C grades.

Top achievers included head prefects Jenna Macartney(A*, A,B) and Lucy Rodgers (B,B,C), Megan Dunne (A,A,B), Lucy Haggan (A*,B,B), Samantha Hegarty (A,B,B), Courtney Smyth (A*,B,C) Chloe Robinson (A,A,C), Kirsty Caldwell (B,B,B), Mica Windrum (A,A).

Subjects with 100 per cent A* - C success include art and design, history, health and social care and sports studies.

All students also achieved the top level, three, in the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness which will enhance their CVs for university.

Three quarters of the year group have now had their first choice university places confirmed, with the remainder pending.

Mrs Stewart addded: “Within the Carrickfergus Learning Community, Downshire students also performed very well with top grades achieved in geography, home economics, IT and performing arts.

Results at AS level were also very encouraging with some outstanding individual performances from Alex Montgomery (A,A,A), Rebecca Noble (A,A,A),Lauryn Glass (A,A,B), Abbie Nellins (A,B,C), Emma Baird (B,B,B), Rebecca Sleator (A,C,C), Kathryn Templar (B,B,C) and Rachel Boone (B,C,C).

Mrs. Stewart said that “all staff, students and parents were delighted with the high standards reached in all “A” level subjects” and extended her sincere congratulations to the young people and their teachers on a job well done.

Tom Creighton, MBE, chairman of the Board of Governors added his congratulations to all concerned and noted that “it is a delight to celebrate these excellent results as Downshire School moves into its 40th anniversary year”.
