St. Joseph’s principal surprised at PSNI appeal

St Joseph’s Primary School principal, Mrs Maria Gough, has said she was “taken by surprise” when a Lisburn PSNI Facebook page appeal urged members of staff who taught at the school from 1990-1996 to get in touch.

The online appeal appeared on Tuesday, asking people to contact the Antrim Public Protection Unit.

Police wouldn’t comment on the appeal, since removed from Facebook, beyond saying it was part of an ongoing investigation.

However, Mrs Gough said it was in connection with someone who no longer worked at the school.

A school statement said: “This morning (Wednesday) following a conversation with the principal, the PSNI made the school aware they are investigating an alleged incident in the school during the 1990s.

“The complaint is in relation to a former member of staff.”

The school said that at all times it had cooperated fully with the PSNI on the matter.
