Electricity works to continue over summer

Northern Ireland Electricity Networks is continuing work to complete an underground cable project in Lisburn in the coming weeks.

The project involves installing high voltage underground electricity cables along the Glenavy, Brokerstown and Lough Roads to connect around 25MW of solar PV farms to a major substation in the city.

Work will begin on the Glenavy Road from Monday July 4 until the end of August. The road will be closed from the junction with Brokerstown Road to the junction at Sheepwalk Road with diversions via Prince William Road, Lady Wallace Avenue, Pond Park Road East, Mullaghglass Road and Sheepwalk Road. Access will be maintained for residents.

Shirley Devlin, NIE Networks Customer Relations Manager for the Lisburn area said that while this work could cause some disruption, NIE Networks would endeavour to minimise this.

“We apologise for any inconvenience to motorists and residents and thank them for their patience while our contractors carry out essential cable installation. We will be using four teams to work concurrently along the Glenavy Road, reducing the time taken to complete the project.”

The project to connect the solar farms is due to complete by the end of the year with energisation in 2017.
