Lisburn Councillor Alexander Redpath has called for an enterprise zone to be established at the former site of the Maze Prison.
Further development at the site has stalled in light of the cancellation of the proposed Conflict Transformation Centre. The only major development to go ahead at the site is Balmoral Park which houses the Royal Agricultural Society showgrounds.
“The Maze site presents one of the most exciting economic opportunities for Northern Ireland,” said Mr Redpath.
“One way to keep this pressure up and help the further development of the Maze site would be establishing an enterprise zone at the Maze. Northern Ireland’s first enterprise zone is being tested in Coleraine. Such an enterprise zone would allow businesses established at the Maze site to avail of increased capital allowances and access to superfast broadband.
“The Maze site has huge potential and with a proposed motorway link will soon provide excellent infrastructure. We should prioritise this site for economic projects. The fact that further development has been put on hold to ideological reasons is totally unacceptable.”
